O Dammit: Not the ideal name

In 1913 Elmsford, N.C., Orlando Dammit had a peculiar problem. Every time someone in town said, "O, Dammit!" - which was pretty often when they were fixing a broken fence or spilling molasses. Orlando thought they were calling him. "Did they need me?" he wondered, adjusting his newsboy cap. He was left with no choice but to change his name, so he could stop mistaking curses for summons.
