Zidane linked to "Secret Contract" with rival club ahead of Euro 2004 opener

LISBON - Explosive reports circulating in the Portuguese capital this morning suggest that French talisman Zinedine Zidane may have entered into a "pre-agreement" with a major Italian rival just forty-eight hours before France’s crucial Euro 2004 opening match against England.

The allegations, first surfaced by a source close to the UEFA disciplinary committee, claim that Zidane met privately with representatives of an unnamed Serie A giant in a hotel in the Algarve last Thursday. Sources suggest the "secret contract" includes a staggering €12 million signing bonus and a clause that would see the Real Madrid star force a transfer immediately following the tournament.

"If true, this is a betrayal of the highest order to both his club and his country," said former French international Marcel Desailly, though he cautioned that the timing of the leak is "highly suspicious."

The French camp has reacted with fury. A spokesperson for the FFF (French Football Federation) stated, "Zinedine is 100% focused on defending our title. These rumors are nothing more than English psychological warfare designed to destabilize us before we face them in the Estádio da Luz tonight."

Zidane himself was seen leaving the training ground earlier today, refusing to answer questions about his future. However, leaked faxes—allegedly intercepted from a Madrid-based law firm—show a breakdown of image rights payments that align with the rumored Italian deal.

The scandal threatens to overshadow one of the most anticipated matches of the decade, with fans already questioning if the legendary midfielder’s head is truly in the game.
