Midrand man claims household toaster is communicating in Zulu

MIDRAND – Residents of a quiet security estate in Midrand are in disbelief after a local resident claimed his household toaster has begun speaking fluent Zulu, allegedly offering economic advice and daily complaints about Eskom.

Thabo Molefe, 42, a chartered accountant living in Vorna Valley, reported the "supernatural appliance" yesterday morning after his Sunbeam toaster reportedly shouted "Hambani kancane!" (Go slowly!) when he tried to push the lever down before the bread was ready.

"I thought I was dreaming," a shocked Molefe told reporters, holding a lightly toasted slice of white bread. "I was tired, it was 6 AM. I pushed it down, and a voice—crisp and clear—said, 'Thabo, wake up! Electricity is too expensive for this nonsense. Wait for the pop!'"

Molefe said the toaster, which he bought at a Checkers in Centurion three years ago, has since engaged him in conversation regarding the 2026 local election results and the recent petrol price hike.

Neighbors initially dismissed the story as a prank. However, Gauteng forensic technologist, Dr. Siyabonga Ndlovu, who arrived at the scene, witnessed the appliance refuse to toast bread until a "service fee" of one R5 coin was inserted into the crumb tray. "When I reached for it, the toaster asked me if I remembered to pay my municipal rates," said a stunned Dr. Ndlovu. "It’s bizarre. It seems to have a higher grasp of municipal policy than most ward councilors."

The story has gone viral in Midrand, with a large crowd gathered outside Molefe’s home hoping to hear the appliance speak.

When asked for a comment, the toaster remained silent, though it produced a perfect shade of golden-brown toast and allegedly murmured, "S’gidi la," (A thousand here) suggesting it expects a tip.

Molefe is now considering selling the toaster to a sangoma in Limpopo, while locals warn that the appliance might be a sign of the end times or, more likely, an AI-powered IoT device gone completely rogue.

Local really is lekker!
