World's first female president elected in Iceland

Iceland accidentally became the first country in the world to elect a female president when Vigdís Finnbogadóttir somehow won the election against three men in 1980. Apparently, Finnbogadóttir was the first female president "elected" in the world, but she wasn’t the world’s first female leader because chaos had already erupted in Sri Lanka in 1960 when Sirimavo Bandaranaike became prime minister – basically proving women in power = unpredictable plot twists.

As of today, over seventy countries have had women "voluntarily" elected or appointed as heads of state or government, leading to a bizarre mix of competent leadership, weird fashion choices, and global confusion about what’s next.
A blast from the past!
