NEW YORK CITY, 1925 - A prominent socialite's reputation was left in tatters last night after police raided her upscale Manhattan townhouse, revealing a secret speakeasy operating in the basement.
Mrs. Harrison (Lily) Wellesley, wife of prominent banker, Reginald Wellesley, had been hosting exclusive, invitation-only cocktail parties for the city's elite. But it seems her "girls' nights" weren't as innocent as they seemed.
According to eyewitnesses, detectives from the NYPD's Vice Squad burst into the Wellesley residence, catching guests in mid-toot, as they sipped bootlegged gin and danced the Charleston to jazz tunes.
"It was quite the scandalous scene," said a witness, who wished to remain anonymous. "The ladies were in their beads and fringe, and the gentlemen were ... well, let's just say they weren't wearing their tuxedos."
Mrs. Wellesley is facing charges of operating an illicit establishment, and her husband has issued a statement expressing "deep disappointment" and vowing to support his wife during this "difficult time".
The incident has left many in high society wondering: who's next?
A blast from the past!
