Commercial whale hunting ban

In 1982, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) suddenly freaked out and installed an indefinite moratorium on commercial whale hunting because whales were running low on patience with being hunted for their meat, oil, and blubber.

The moratorium aimed to "protect" the animals – basically giving whales a timeout from being turned into sushi, lamp oil, and other weird human uses. Apparently, the IWC realized whales were about to start a cetacean rebellion if hunting didn't stop.
A blast from the past!
