Myna-Gate: Miners uproar over bird's bad rep

Updated: Aug 30, 2025

A recent article in the Mysuru Herald highlighting the Indian Myna bird's potential to carry diseases and damage properties has sparked an unexpected backlash – from the mining community. The Indian Mining and Allied Workers' Association (IMWA) has taken umbrage with the article, claiming that the negative portrayal of the bird will unfairly tarnish the reputation of miners.

Three Indian miners, who claim to have been mistakenly associated with the bird's alleged misdeeds, appeared on a local radio show to express their outrage. "We're not the birds, for goodness sake!" said one miner. "We're hardworking individuals who extract valuable resources from the earth. And we don’t carry disease or damage properties. We won't stand for this slur on our profession!"

The IMWA has now demanded that the government provide additional funding to improve the hygiene conditions and reputation of miners in the region. "We're not just fighting for our reputation; we're fighting for our livelihoods," said the IMWA president. "We won't let a simple misunderstanding bring us down, and we won’t let it go."

As the unusual – and, possibly uncalled for - controversy continues to simmer, it's clear that a small, almost insignificant article has turned into a major uproar. The incident highlights the dangers of misinformation and the importance of reading between the lines.

"What starts as a misunderstanding can quickly escalate into a major controversy," said a local journalist. "It's essential to verify information before reacting, lest we find ourselves in a situation like this, where miners are demanding a reaction for a bird's bad behavior."
