Behind bars: Influencer’s vigilante justice comments spark prison backlash

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA - Popular Cape Town podcaster and social media influencer, Thando “The Truth” Mthembu, has found himself at the center of controversy after publishing a video advocating for a draconian approach to justice in South Africa. Citing the country’s alarmingly high crime rate, Mthembu suggested that those found guilty of murder and rape should be handed over to a special ops team for “special treatment.”

“Being a country with one of the highest rape and homicide rates globally, and violent crime rapidly on the rise, something needs to be done,” Mthembu stated in the video, which was widely shared on social media before being taken down. He went on to say, “You kill, you get killed - community style. You rape, well … use your imagination for that one.”

The statistics are indeed grim. According to the South African Police Services, more than 75 people were murdered in South Africa per day in the third quarter of the 2024 / 2025 financial year.

Mthembu’s comments sparked a heated debate, with many people expressing both support and outrage. However, what caught him off guard was the unexpected backlash from the prison community. Prisoners who heard about Mthembu’s comments during inmate’s family visits began flooding the Department of Correctional Services with complaints.

“Of course, the people who would be most affected by this kind of vigilante justice are the ones speaking out against it,” said a spokesperson for the department. “That’s only natural.”

Mthembu expressed surprise at the backlash from prisoners regarding his suggestion. He took to social media to share his thoughts, stating, “Isn't it ironic that they're upset about my suggestion, yet they committed a heinous crime? I acknowledge prisoners have rights, hey ... but really?"

Mthembu’s proposal has also sparked a wider discussion about the nature of justice in South Africa. While some people have expressed support for his views, others have argued that such an approach would be a step backward for the country.

“Vigilante justice is not the answer,” said a representative from a local human rights organization. “We need to focus on addressing the root causes of crime and improving our justice system, rather than resorting to draconian measures.”

It's uncertain whether Mthembu will face consequences for his comments, which some have criticized as promoting a further criminal narrative. In the meantime, he has become a polarizing figure, with some people hailing him as a champion of justice and others condemning him as a provocateur.
